Спак - великий сценарист (несомненно, лучший во французском кинематографе, наравне с Жаком Компанэзом), великий мизантроп - берет структуру, напоминающую фильм-альманах 30-х гг., и населяет ее красочной толпой хамов, тупиц, сентиментальных старух, равнодушных людей и паяцев, которые все вместе составляют захватывающий, хоть и утрированный, образ послевоенного французского общества. Этот образ изобилует критическими оценками и противоречит безучастному спокойствию, которое авторы своей идеей хотели возвести в ранг высшей ценности. Фильм живет как раз благодаря этим противоречиям, а также благодаря таланту дюжины блистательных актеров.
